About Public Works
In January of 1997, the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians exercised their right of Self-Governance and assumed control of all Bureau of Indian Affairs programs under a Self-Governance Compact. In order to maximize efficiency of personnel and budget dollars, the Red Lake Tribal Council established the Division of Public Works. The Division of Public Works is the merger and reorganization of the Engineering and Construction Program, Road Maintenance Program, Sanitation Department, Facilities Management Program, Water and Sewer Department, and Construction Management. Each program provides an inter-related function and service for tribal administration and the residents of the Red Lake Nation.
The Division oversees all duties, services, and functions related to infrastructure and facilities constructed for public use and convenience. The Division compliance with all land use policies and procedures, zoning ordinances, land use plan documents, transportation plans, and archeological and environmental compliance needs, and operates within the limits of established departmental budgets.

Award Winning Infrastructure |
A Word of WelcomeThe goal of the Red Lake Nation's Division of Public Works is to develop and maintain adequate public facilities for the Red Lake Nation. In accomplishing this we will strive to promote the public health, safety, comfort, convenience, and general welfare of the residents of the Red Lake Reservation through the creation of safe, adequate, and economically viable services such as roads, sewer services, safe drinking water, solid waste removal, and energy-efficient and functional public buildings and grounds. In doing this, we will ensure that we take all steps necessary to prevent the over-crowding of land and undue impacts on the natura environment, provide protection to environmental and cultural resources, and to preserve forests, wetlands, surface waters and ground water for present and future generations of tribal citizens.
