In 2023, the Red Lake Nation and MNDOT will be reconstructing Highway 1 between the communities of Red Lake and Redby. As part of this project, the Red Lake Engineering Department will be constructing a 4 mile walking trail between the Red Lake Government Center and New Beginnings at Redby.

This paved trail will also feature pedestrian rest area facilities to allow pedestrians a comfortable place to sit and enjoy themselves while walking.

Each of the rest area facilities will be placed at the intersections of Hwy 1 and various important secondary roads. The rest areas will be named for each of the 7 Clans of the Red Lake Nation as follows:

1. Eagle: at the junction of TH-1 and the east entrance road to the Red Lake Government Center;
2. Marten: at the junction of TH-1 and West Bartons Camp road;
3. Otter: at the junction of TH-1 and East Bartons Camp road;
4. Turtle: at the junction of TH-1 and Heart Lake road (Res Hwy 44);
5. Bear: at the junction of TH-1 and Shemaugun Creek road;
6. Bullhead: at the junction of TH-1 and Copper City road (Res Hwy 29);
7. Kingfisher: at the junction of TH-1 and the entrance to Oskimajitadah training center.

In addition to serving as rest areas for pedestrian using this trail, these rest facility locations can also serve as drop-off/pick-up locations (aka bus stops) for Red Lake transit.

The facilities themselves will include various amenities including benches, trash receptacles, planters (for beautification), exercise equipment (chin up bars, etc.) for those seeking to enhance their exercise, and interpretive signs that provide some additional cultural/educational information about each of the clans that can be enjoyed by pedestrian users.
